Easy Bisi Bele Bath Recipe | Karnataka Style

It is a spicy, rice-based dish with origins in the state of karnataka .Bisi bele bath, which translates to ‘hot lentil rice dish’ in kannada language, is a wholesome meal. It is said to have originated in the Mysore Palace and from there spread across the entire state.

Rice can be cooked with toor dal and mixed with some vegetables. ingredients are rice, toor dal and all variety of vegetables and seasoning.Spices like nutmeg and asafoetida, curry leaves and tamarind pulp used in its preparation contribute to the unique flavor and taste of this dish sambar sadam.

Ingredients for Bisi Bele bath

  • cups rice soaked
  • 6 small onions
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • ¾ cup toor dal soaked and drained
  • 6 dry red chilli
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • 8-9 beans chopped
  • 1 carrot sliced
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • tsp tamarind paste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tomato finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp ghee


How to cook the recipe

  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add onion,and tomato ,mix and sauté till soft.
  • Add beans ,carrot , small onions and turmeric powder ,red chilli powder ,sambar powder and mix. Add soaked rice, toor dal, salt, 2-3 cups water and tamarind paste, mix well, cover and pressure cook till the pressure is released 4-6 times.
  • Heat 2 tablespoons ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds ,curry leaves ,dry red chili and sauté for 20 seconds.Add this to the cooked rice mixture.
  • Bisi bele bath is ready to serve.
